Raisin in the Sun questions

1. I believe that who Beneatha should marry was an issue because at the time being unmarried was not an option. It was the 50's so thoughts and perceptions of women or family life were very conventional. Since Beneatha was already at the age to think of marriage, the family was very pushy in getting her to think in that direction. She was a liberal thinker so I believe that her family wished she was more settled and traditional.
2. Beneatha says this to Walter because because when the family thinks that he cannot do another bad decision he surprises them with continuing to let down the family and drive them even lower into the hole. So when she states "where is the bottom" she means when are you going to stop? When are you going to grow up and make smart decisions that elevate your family instead of driving them deeper into the ground. Selling the house for a profit with the white man is worse than drinking and throwing away his dad's money because it doesn't turn into an issue of just business. It conflicts with the family's pride and what they as apeople have worked so hard for. If they sell the house because white people feel unconmfortable with their existance then their giving into the oppression that 6 generations have been trying to escape their whole lives. Something that they have died for.
3. Mama's plant signifies the family. The plant seemed to stay alive although there was not enough sunlight to make it grow. It was shriviling yet not dead. This represents the family. They were in a place they were unhappy with, suffocating because they knew they could do better as a family. When they looked in bad shape they still stuck together and managed to keep going, just like the plant has managed to survive in harsh conditions.
4. Raisin in the Sun is still relevant because there are people who still go through hardships economically and as a family. Although we do not live in a world that segregates blacks we still do live in a racist world where people reject others because or race, sexual orientaion and religious reasons. So the message of overcoming an opression and still keeping your pride can still speak to us as a society. That eventhough we believe we have hit rockbottom, that does not mean we have to give up our pride and our sense of who we are for others that want to keep us down. There is no excuse fot that.
