A Raisin in the Sun, the film

The film script for the film adaptation from 1961, starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee, was written by Lorraine Hansberry. However, film is a different medium than theater. (Also, there has historically been less respect for the original text (novel, story, play, etc.) in Hollywood than is often shown in the theater. In film, the director is almost always the author (auteur as the French call it) of a film.) Keeping in mind that there will be some translation as we move from the stage to the big screen, I'd like you to try and think about what expectations you have before you screen the film this week. As you're watching the film, try to note the moments that surprise you. You also might note anything that's been altered or left out of the original script and ask yourself why.
