Abstract painting, to me, is a painting which does not have a definite meaning. It depends on a person’s perception and how they comprehend it. Most of the time, the message behind the painting is not apparent or easily understandable. They usually consist of a geometric lines or just colors. The painting we saw in our last class accommodated almost the same color but there presentation was very different and they both showed completely distinct qualities.
The first painting we saw was looking like a tree. The colors were more of a bright tone, but at the same time the white background and the combination of the blue and green was making it look like an imagery of a blast spreading towards the right, when I first saw that painting the brightness if it looked a bit depressing and bizarre. Then again, we cannot portray the exact interpretation of the painting. It’s usually easier to understand an abstract painting by going with your guts feeling.
The second painting by Joan Mitchells was very simple looking. The arrangement of the colors was giving it a very peaceful and mellow feeling. The green was looking like an earth and the blue was representing a sky or maybe an ocean. After discussing these painting in the class I found one thing very surprising that these two painting with no visible meaning can interpret so many expressions. And everyone in the class looked them differently and to understand there meaning they pictured it in a various aspects.
