Walter Lee Younger sr. left some money for his family by being a member of a life insurance company and paying his premium. He demonstrate good leadership for what he did, by leaving a little finanical support for those whom he left behind, after his death. This man was a laborer and he still had the brains and the inteligence to give his family something valuable like liquid assets, to remember him by. What happens when the check comes, his son Walter Lee Younger jr. wants to open a liquir store, his daughter Beneatha need some of the money for medical school, his wife Lena Younger needs a house. Here is where the conflict and struggle for power begins, as each character tussle with their ideas about how the money should be spend.
But the real question I have to asked was this a comerical Lorraine Hansberry was writing, so that any person who read her book may see the importance of having a life insurance policy. cause if this was the case i am sure impressed. she real focus on african american struggles with earning money, twenty plus years after the great depression . there are many important part of the screen play and the book, but the key behind the story in my mind was family and the important of love.
